COWI's science-based targets have been approved

2024.02.19

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved COWI’s carbon-emission reduction targets. With this important mark, COWI joins a club of more than 5,000 companies who have aligned their goals with the latest climate science and with the Paris Agreement.

In the validation letter, the Science Based Targets initiative commends COWI's “ambitious net-zero target, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process.”

A landmark to be proud of, says Natalie Shaverdian Riise-Knudsen, COWI's Group CFO:

“We should all celebrate this important milestone we have achieved together, and I would like to thank everybody who has contributed. Delivering on these targets is what COWI must do to contribute to shaping a more sustainable world.”

She adds:

“Now, the hard work continues. We have our targets, now we need to reach them. It will take courage and sacrifice, but there is no other way. And I’m confident we can achieve them by joining forces across COWI and with our suppliers. It is important for our customers, our business and our employees, and it is crucial for shaping a healthier planet for future generations.”

COWI has committed to reducing its direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) by 42%, its indirect emissions (Scope 2) by 42% and its indirect emissions (Scope 3) by 25% in 2030, compared to emissions in 2022, and to become net zero by 2050.

In COWI, Scope 1 emissions derive mainly from company cars, while Scope 2 emissions come from, e.g., district heating and electricity. Scope 3 emissions come from the value chain, such as business travel and procurement of goods and services, including use of consultants.

COWI’s Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment:

  • COWI’s SBTi commitment is to reduce Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 42%, and Scope 3 emissions, including air travel, by 25% in absolute figures by 2030 compared to 2022 – and to become net zero by 2050.
  • Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions, such as fossil fuels from mainly company cars.
  • Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from, e.g., district heating and electricity.
  • Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions from the value chain, such as business travel and procurement of goods and services, including use of consultants.

The Paris agreement

Reaching a net zero target is part of the global effort to meet the Paris Agreement goal, which is to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius globally.
